Apple will enter the world of car production
Apple will enter the world of car production |
Apple is seeking to start producing cars in 2024 that may include its cutting-edge battery technology.
The iPhone manufacturer's auto-manufacturing plan is known as Project Titan, and has been running sporadically since 2014 when the company first began designing its own cars from scratch. At one point, the company backed away from this attempt to focus on software and reassess its goals. Doug Field, a veteran Apple official who worked with Tesla, returned to oversee the project in 2018 and laid off 190 workers in 2019.
Since then, two sources familiar with the matter, speaking on condition of anonymity because Apple has not announced its plans, said the company has made enough progress to now target cars for consumers.
A third source familiar with the design of Apple's battery said that the new battery design is pivotal to Apple's strategy, as it may "severely" reduce the cost of batteries and increase the distance the car travels before the battery needs to be replaced.
Apple declined to comment on its plans for its future products.
Building cars is a supply chain challenge even for Apple, which makes hundreds of millions of dollars in electronic products annually but has never before built cars.
It is not clear who will assemble the Apple-branded cars, but sources have stated that they expect the company to rely on a manufacturing partner to make its cars.
Two sources familiar with the matter said the postponements related to the Covid-19 pandemic could delay the start of production until or after 2025
