Chinese robots take a swab to analyze Corona, instead of doctors

The northern city of Shenyang, in China, has deployed robots to take throat swab samples to detect the Corona virus, as the country ramps up mass testing to stem the outbreak of the pandemic.

Robotic arms, designed to collect samples from citizens, to reduce the risk of cross-contagion, were used as part of a campaign to count the increase in cases in surrounding provinces.

Waiting people queued their government identification cards in a scanner, before a message recorded in a polite female voice asking them to open their mouths.  The robotic arm is coated with a layer of protective plastic, and a human in a protective suit controls its movements from a safe distance away, guided by a camera on the robot.

China has controlled the virus to a large extent since it first appeared in the central city of Wuhan more than a year ago.

But in recent weeks, China has seen a new domestic outbreak across the country, which has led to domestic lockdowns, travel restrictions and widespread testing of tens of millions of people.
