 Why do whales commit suicide?

Why do whales commit suicide?

Whale:

 * The whale (English: Whale) is one of the aquatic mammals, and it is the largest mammals, vertebrates, and animals known in the world.  Whales belong to the order of cetaceans, which includes in addition to whales, dolphins, and porpoises. Cetaceans are descendants of land mammals and are believed to be of the hoofed order, and they moved into the water 50 million years ago.  Pisces have the characteristics of a mammal;  He is hot-blooded, and he has hair, albeit a little, as he multiplies by childbirth, and the mother breastfeeds young children, and his heart consists of four chambers, and the air is breathing through the lungs, but at the same time he has been adapted to swimming and living in water, so his body is streamlined, and his  Both front and caudal fins, and most whales have dorsal fins.

Whale species divide whales into two main groups:

 * Toothed whales (in English: The Toothed Whales): Scientifically known as (Odontoceti), and its types include the sperm whale, the dwarf sperm whale, the white whale, and others.

 * Balinese whales (English: Baleen Whales): Scientifically known as (Mysticeti), and there are in their mouth plaques instead of teeth, and among its types are the blue whale, the fin whale, the sai whale, the zebra whale, the omura whale, the humpback whale, the gray whale,  And minke whales, bowhead whales, and others.

The fact that whales commit suicide:

 * One of the most tragic phenomena is whales stranding on the shore, as it is impressive to see them die.  Whales die when they strand to the shore, and although whales are famous for having an advanced navigation system that enables them to determine their direction in the sea, it is known that some of their species, especially flying whales (masters), beak whales, and killer whales, tend towards shallow water or  Beaches, which leads to their death, and this phenomenon may include single whales or a whole herd, and February of this year 2017 witnessed the delinquency of more than 400 flying whales on the coast of the southern island of New Zealand, so is it a collective suicide attempt?

But the question that arises is: Why do whales die when they strand ashore?

 * The reason for this is that the body of the whale is designed to float and float on the water, and the water reduces the pressure of the large mass of the whale on its internal organs, and when the whale reaches the ground the internal organs are unable to withstand the pressure caused by the body mass on it, so they are exposed to internal wounds, which leads to their death, in addition to  That her presence on land causes her external bruises and wounds as well.

The phenomenon of whales stranding towards shores:

 * In fact, there is no accurate scientific explanation for the phenomenon of whale stranding towards the shore, but there are several theories to explain it, and scientists still need more study and research.  To be certain of the real causes of this phenomenon, and among the theories that may explain the delinquency of whales towards the shore, the following are:

1- Short and medium-frequency sonar waves: Some researchers and environmentalists believe that sonar waves launched by naval forces such as the US Navy to monitor submarines may confuse whales, disrupt their navigation system, and cause them to lose direction, prompting them to shallow waters near the shore in search of safety  It has been found that whales exposed to sonar waves also exhibit physical injuries, including bleeding in the brain, ears, and internal tissues.

 * It also showed severe symptoms of low air pressure or diver's paralysis (English: Decompression Sickness), which explains the change in diving patterns in whales, and it is believed that beak-nosed whales, and melon-headed whales are the whales most affected by sonar.  In view of the seriousness of this phenomenon, the Natural Resources Defense Council and some other environmental groups filed a lawsuit against the US Navy in 2008.

 * The Navy subsequently undertook to study the effect of sonar on the behavior of marine mammals, including whales, and the federal courts in both California and Hawaii issued instructions to the Navy to limit the use of sonar.  Whale disease: Whale science researchers at Whitehead Laboratory at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia believe that a whale that suffers from some diseases resulting from infections, parasites, or injuries, or even diseases that result from genetic mutations and aging, may plunge towards the beach.

 * If the sick whale happens to be the dominant whale that leads the herd of whales, the rest of the whales may follow him to the shore, and they may get stuck in the low tide.  There is another hypothesis that explains the mass delinquency of whales towards the shore, which is that groups of whales head towards the shore when they receive a distress call from a whale that has been stuck on the beach, and then mistakenly finds themselves suspended, too, and is unable to return to the water.

2- Lack of food: It is believed that the lack of food sources in the whales feeding areas and the resulting confusion and weakness may push them towards the beach, or during their pursuit of prey or their escape from a predator, they find themselves reaching shallow waters, on the other hand, some find that  This explanation is unacceptable, especially since whales may strand ashore in places where the usual prey of whales is not available.

3- Environmental toxins: Researchers from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration indicate that water pollution and the red tide phenomenon are;  It is the phenomenon of an increased growth of a type of algae that produces its toxins in the water, which may be behind the phenomenon of whales stranding ashore.

 Other factors:

 * It is believed that extreme weather factors, underwater seismic activity, and magnetic field anomalies may have a role in the phenomenon of whales stranding ashore.

General information about whales Here is some general information about whales:

 * The blue whale is the largest animal in the world, and its length reaches thirty meters, and its weight reaches 180 tons.  Whales can eat microscopic plankton, and they can eat very large fish.  Whales sleep eight hours a day, but they sleep in a unique way.  As half of her brain sleeps and the other half remains awake;  Because she needs to be conscious in order to breathe.  Whales pull their reproductive organs into a body cavity while swimming;  This is to maintain the fluidity of its body.  The overhunting of whales is causing the extinction of some of their species, and the existence of others that are threatened with extinction.
